Uravan Uranium Project

The 680-acre Uravan Uranium site began as a radium-recovery plant in 1912 before being converted to a processing facility for uranium and vanadium ore by Union Carbide in the 1940s. The plant ultimately milled over 10 million tons of ore before closing in 1984 and transferring operations to Union Carbide subsidiary Umetco. The site was placed on the "Superfund" National Priorities List in 1986. As part of the site’s remediation, more than 971,762 dry tons of building debris and contaminated soil were sealed in the Naturita disposal cell, which has since been closed.
