University of Denver Applied Research and Technology Institute

The University of Denver Applied Research and Technology Institute conducted tests with small amounts of radioactive materials for the Department of Energy (DOE), under license from the former Atomic Energy Commission. The Institute also conducted research on explosive device performance, target-projectile interaction, and various other military projects. It continues to do military contract work. According to a 1986 DOE memorandum, the National Lead Company of Ohio utilized 83 subcontractors and vendors to support its work at Fernald, one of which was the University of Denver. These subcontractors and vendors handled various forms and quantities of radioactive materials. The University of Denver program operated from 1965 to October 1976.
